Stigma around alcohol or drug addiction

stigma around alcohol or drug addiction

Drug and alcohol stigma stops people who need treatment and support from getting help as they feel judged affects the friends and family of people struggling with an alcohol or drug problem. Stigma occurs when individuals or groups are misjudged or labeled due to certain myths and stereotypes. It can lead to exclusion, shame, and discrimination. Self-stigma is when a person feels unworthy of help.

People struggling with drug or alcohol issues may judge themselves, which can negatively impact their sense of self-worth and damage their self-esteem. Stigma affects individuals, families and communities and results in people excluding themselves from services.Family members are also affected by stigma. This can limit their ability to get help for their loved ones. It may also stop them from seeking help for themselves. Stigma experienced by families can also lead to feelings of shame, guilt, anxiety or blame.

Why address stigma?

  • Stigma can leave people with drug or alcohol problems feeling isolated and overlooked. It can even prevent them from accessing the services they need. When this kind of stigma is widespread in society, asking for help for drug and alcohol addiction stops becoming an option.
  • Many people may feel ashamed or afraid to ask for help—often waiting until they reach a crisis point. This can delay support not just for substance use, but also for related challenges like mental or physical health issues, housing, or debt.
  • Even in early recovery, individuals may fear judgment from others. This stigma can follow them into volunteer roles, education, training, or employment, limiting their opportunities and confidence.
  • Families also carry a heavy burden. They are often central to supporting a loved one’s recovery, yet stigma can stop them from seeking help for themselves or their family members. Addiction can lead to marital troubles, which can result in divorce or separation. Physical and emotional abuse can lead to divorce. Consequences of addiction can worsen over time. Family members may break apart, as family members may struggle to coexist. Overcoming stigma is needed as at times, counselling for family members can be essential for recovery.
