Every Parent Has Do's and Don’ts: A Gentle Look at Parenting Then and Now

There’s no such thing as a perfect parent. Every parent has moments they’re proud of, and moments they wish they had handled differently — and that’s completely okay. Parenting isn’t about flawless decisions; it’s about growing alongside your child, learning through the ups and downs, and doing your best with love and intention.

Each generation of parents carries its own set of do’s and don’ts, shaped by the time they live in, the resources they have, and their own lived experiences.

In earlier times, parenting was simpler and more instinctive. Often referred to as natural parenting, this style relied heavily on intuition, community support, and everyday experience. Children were raised in close-knit families, learning by observing and participating in daily life. It was a nurturing, grounded approach. But while it offered warmth and connection, it sometimes lacked open emotional expression or awareness of mental well-being—concepts that weren’t widely talked about back then.

In contrast, modern parenting is more informed, intentional, and emotionally attuned. Today’s parents read, research, and reflect. They attend workshops, go to parent counselling, and strive to be mindful in their responses. Emotional intelligence, mental health, and respectful communication are emphasized more than ever. Yet, with this awareness also comes pressure—to be patient always, to respond perfectly, and to constantly meet high expectations.

The truth is, both styles have value. Natural parenting teaches us to trust our instincts and lean into simplicity. Modern parenting invites us to grow emotionally and parent with greater awareness.

Rather than comparing or criticizing either approach, let’s hold space for both. Because in the end, every parent has their own path, their own lessons, and their own rhythm. What truly matters is showing up with love, staying open to learning, and building a strong, safe connection with your child.

Children don’t need perfect parents. They need present ones.
